Approaches go in as layers. Compacted subgrade first, then a coarse crushed stone base at a depth set by what drives on it, then a crushed surface course whose fines lock the top together. Erosion control blanket and seed go on the new ditch slopes so the shoulders hold while grass takes them. What gets skipped on a cheap entrance is the compaction between those layers, and the result is a washboard surface and a soft spot over the pipe within two seasons. A perfect culvert under a bad approach still hands the owner a puddle.

The Grade From Road to Culvert to Drive

Three elevations have to agree: the edge of the road, the fill over the pipe, and the driveway behind it. Get them wrong in one direction and you build a hump that scrapes a low car. Get them wrong the other way and you build a dip that ponds every time it rains. Crown and Cross Fall

Behind the road the driveway needs to shed water sideways. A crown sends it off both edges. A cross fall sends it off one. Either works. Neither happens by accident, and a flat drive on flat ground collects its own rain and runs it downhill to the entrance.

Sight Distance and Where the County Wants It

The road authority has a say in where an entrance goes, and sight distance is usually the reason. Moving an approach thirty feet along the frontage sometimes turns a refused application into an approved one. We ask that question before anybody prices stone.

Why does my car scrape where the driveway meets the road?

The approach carries a hump, usually right where the fill over the culvert was built up higher than the pavement edge. A car with low clearance touches at the break point rather than on the slope itself. The fix is regrading the transition so the change in slope happens over a longer distance instead of all at once. It is a grading job, not a pipe job, though the pipe elevation is often what created the hump.

What rock should go on a gravel approach?

Two layers doing two jobs. A coarse crushed stone base goes down first and gets compacted, because that is the layer carrying the weight. A smaller crushed surface course goes over the top, and the fines in it lock the surface together so it does not roll under tires. Rounded river gravel skips both jobs. It has no angular faces to key into each other, so it moves and never sets up.

Water runs down my driveway and straight into the culvert. Is that a problem?

It is, and it is the quiet reason a lot of approaches fail. A drive with no crown collects its own rain and delivers it as a stream to the entrance, on top of everything the ditch is already carrying. That flow cuts the surface on the way down and overloads the pipe when it arrives. Rebuilding the crown or cross fall sends that water off the sides into the grass instead.

Can you tie a concrete or asphalt apron to a gravel driveway?

Yes, and the joint between them is the part that needs thought. Hard surface at the road end holds the transition against turning traffic and stops gravel migrating onto the pavement. The gravel side has to be built up to meet it flush and compacted properly, or the edge of the apron becomes a lip that catches a plow blade. We build the base under both so they settle together.
